Manage
Tags
Small labels on your blog posts and projects, each with a page of its own.
A tag is a small label, such as “Budget” or “Weekend job”. A post or project can have a few. Every tag gets a page of its own on your website, listing everything that carries it.
Tags work like Categories, with two differences. A tag cannot sit inside another tag. And you are meant to use more of them, for smaller ideas.
Your blog posts and your projects share one list of tags. Without the blog or the portfolio add-on, tags do nothing, and you can skip this page.
Where to find it
Go to Content, then Website, then Tags. On some websites it sits under Manage, then Tags instead. Both open the same screen.
Only Editors and Admins can open it.
The screen is a table. Each row shows the tag’s name, its slug under it, and Count: how many entries carry it. A search box above the table finds a tag by name.
Adding a tag
- Click Add tag.
- Type a Name, such as
Budget. This is what visitors read. - The Slug fills itself in. It is the last part of the tag’s web address. Leave it.
- Write a line or two in Description (optional).
- Click Create.
Most of the time it is quicker to make a tag from inside a post, as you pick it. Posts shows how.
The tag’s own page
Blog posts with a tag list at /blog/tag/ and then the slug. Projects list at
/work/tag/ and then the slug. The page’s heading is the tag’s Name, and
its first line is the Description.
As with categories, a tag page with a description, or with three or more entries, is the kind search engines list.
Changing a tag
Click the pencil icon on its row. Change the Name or the Description, then click Update. The change is on your website right away.
Warning
Changing the Slug changes the address of the tag’s page. Old links to it stop working. Leave the slug alone once the page is live.
Deleting a tag
Warning
Deleting a tag takes it off every post and project at once, and its page is gone. The posts and projects stay. Nothing brings the tag back.
- Click the three dots on the tag’s row.
- Click Delete tag.
- The panel asks Delete Tag? Click Delete.
Look at Count first. A tag with a count of 0 is on nothing, so deleting it is safe.
Leave these alone
Add to posts gives one tag to many posts at once, from a list of their web addresses. The three dots menu at the top also holds New taxonomy and Delete taxonomy. The first makes a new kind of list your website never shows. The second deletes every tag you have. Do not use either one.
Before you launch
Your website came with two example tags, EXAMPLE and Replace me. Delete both once your own posts and projects have real tags.
Important
There is a second kind of tag in the panel, and it has nothing to do with this screen.
In Leads you can tag an inquiry hot or site visit, then
filter your inbox by it. Those tags stay inside the panel and never show on
your website.
