Add-on

Commerce is an add-on, so not every website has it. If it is not in your menu, see Add-ons to add it.

This is where you find out how the shop is doing. Sales by day, sales by product, plans, a set of tiles across the top, and where your sales tax stands.

Go to Plugins, then Commerce. Click the Reports tab.

Picking a range

Six buttons sit at the top.

ButtonWhat it covers
7 daysThe last seven days.
30 daysThe last thirty days.
MTDThis month so far.
QTDThis quarter so far.
YTDThis year so far.
All timeEverything you have ever sold.

For your own dates, fill in From and To instead.

Days are counted in your own time zone. If you close at 8pm, today ends at midnight where you are.

The chart

Under the tiles is a chart headed Revenue and orders, with your dates beside it. One bar per day, up to 31 days. Longer than that and the bars become weeks.

Money is on the left side. The count of orders is on the right. Rest your mouse on a bar to see the exact figures.

The sub-tabs

Under the chart are four tabs: By day, By product, Orders and Sales tax. The first three are here. Sales tax has its own part below. See Sales tax.

By day is one row per day: Orders, Gross, Refunded, Net and New subscriptions. Days with no sales are left out of the table, so the busy days stand out. The chart still shows them.

By product is one row per thing you sold, with Kind, Quantity and Revenue. Kind says whether it was a product or a plan.

Orders lists every order in your range, right here. Plan payments are in it too, unlike the Orders tab. Click a row to open that order. You can also check rows and use the bar that appears, the same as on the Orders tab. See Orders.

The tiles

These tiles can show. Some are money, some are counts.

TileWhat it means
Revenue (30 days)Money taken in the last 30 days, after refunds.
Orders (30 days)How many orders were paid in the last 30 days.
Average order valueThat revenue split across those orders.
Average lifetime valueWhat the average customer has ever spent with you.
Awaiting fulfillmentOrders not yet at the last stage, Shipped / Completed.
Active subscribersPeople on a plan right now, free trials included.
MRRMonthly recurring revenue: what your plans bring in per month.
Refund rateThe share of orders in your range that were refunded.
Repeat customer rateThe share of buyers who came back for a second order.
Project credits outstandingProject credits your customers have not used yet.
Plan credits outstandingPlan credits your customers have not used yet.

Under the tiles sit two lists, Top products and Top subscriptions. They show your best sellers in the range, with how many and how much. Which ones show follows the Dashboard activity card choice on the Display tab. Both shows both.

More cards

A few more cards show when they have something to say.

Checkout health counts checkouts in your range: Attempts, Completed, Failed, Canceled, Still open and the Failure rate. An attempt is each time a buyer pressed the pay button. A high failure rate means something is wrong at checkout. You can also get an alert when checkouts start failing. See Notifications.

Abandoned carts shows how saved-cart reminders are doing: carts saved, reminded, links opened, and orders they won back. See the carts opens the list. It shows while reminders are on. See Orders.

Outbound clicks counts clicks on products you sell on another site. It shows when you list one.

A few of these need a plain word.

MRR is monthly recurring revenue. It is what your plans are worth in a month. A yearly plan counts as a twelfth of itself.

Lifetime value is what one customer has spent with you, all told. The average tile spreads that across everyone.

Project credits outstanding is a count of credits, never money. A project credit is a unit of work, and your website never puts a price on one. See Customers, credits and referrals.

Important

Most tiles ignore the date buttons. Revenue and orders are always the last 30 days. Awaiting, subscribers and MRR are always right now.

Only Refund rate and the two top lists follow the range you picked.

Top products can list the same thing twice. That happens on older sales, made before your website filed products by name. It is a quirk of old records, and nothing is wrong.

Export CSV

Each sub-table has an Export CSV button, carrying the count of rows.

It saves the table you are looking at, for the dates you picked. Open the file in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

An empty table exports nothing, and tells you so.

Sales tax

Click the Sales tax tab under the chart. It shows how close your sales into each US state are to that state’s threshold. A threshold is the amount of sales into a state after which the state may want you to collect its sales tax.

Important

This tab only shows numbers. It does not change what tax your checkout collects. Whether you need to register in a state is your call, with your accountant. This tab cannot tell you that.

The figures come straight from your Stripe account. They count every Stripe sale: website orders, in-person sales, invoices and payment links, less refunds. The first time you open the tab it can take a minute. After that it updates itself when the figures are over a day old. Refresh from Stripe updates it now.

ColumnWhat it shows
StateThe state. Click it to open that state’s own rule page.
PeriodThe time the state counts sales over. Each state has its own.
SalesYour sales into that state in that time.
TransactionsHow many sales.
ThresholdThe state’s line, such as “$100,000 or 200 transactions”.
% of thresholdHow close you are.
StatusWhere you stand. See below.
StatusWhat it means
RegisteredYou already have a registration for this state in Stripe.
Home stateYour head office state.
Threshold reachedYour sales are at or over the line.
ApproachingYour sales are at 80% of the line or more.
BelowUnder 80%.

Include invoices marked paid outside Stripe adds invoices paid by cash, check or bank transfer. It is off each time you open the tab.

Export CSV saves the table as a file.

The note under the table lists what is not counted, such as cash sales and other card machines. Read it before you rely on a number.

To act on a state, see Stripe key and sales tax.

If a box says credit notes are not being taken off, your Stripe key needs one more permission. See Stripe key and sales tax.

The Display tab

Go to the Settings tab, then Display. This is where you hide what you never use.

There are four groups.

Metrics are the tiles above, and the top lists. Uncheck MRR if you do not sell plans.

Orders columns are the ten columns on the Orders tab.

Customers columns are the ten on the Customers tab.

Dashboard activity card picks what your second dashboard card shows: Recent orders, Subscriptions or Both.

The first three groups have an All and a None button, for turning the lot on or off in one click.

Click Save when you are done. A message reads “Display settings saved.” Cancel puts back what was there before.

Warning

These settings belong to the website, not to your browser.

Hide a column here and it is hidden for everyone who signs in. Your bookkeeper sees the same screen you do.

That is the point, but it does surprise people.

The two dashboard cards

Two cards sit near the top of your Dashboard.

Sales shows six figures: Today, 7 days, 30 days, Orders (30d), Awaiting and Subscribers. When orders are waiting to ship, a seventh reads Ready to ship.

At the bottom of Sales are two links. Reports opens this tab. Open Commerce → opens the Orders tab.

Commerce activity shows your newest orders, your plan counts, or both. The Display tab decides which. Click any order in the list to open it.
